Leslie Showell, EdD
Education (Graduate) 2025

Leslie M. Showell’s educational journey has been nothing short of extensive and enriching. She holds an associate’s degree from Camden County Community College, a bachelor’s degree from Rowan University, a Master’s in Special Education, and an Educational Specialist degree from Grand Canyon University.
With her mentor, Dr. Stephanie James Harris, recommending GMercyU, Leslie began pursuing an EdD in Education Leadership focusing on PreK-12 Schools and School Districts at GMercyU in September 2023.
Leslie’s decision to enroll was heavily influenced by the program’s dissertation support and the ability for students to engage with the enrollment team directly. And, the program offered courses such as Ethics in Educational Leadership & Policy and several dissertation courses that helped to deepen Leslie’s understanding of the field and the global education system.
“During my time at the University, I’ve had the support of exceptional faculty. An interesting personal connection emerged during my interaction with Dr. Bandlow, whose wife was the Superintendent in my children’s school district,” said Leslie. “Their excellent educational experience under her leadership made my academic choice even more personally rewarding. The faculty, including Mr. Hertel, Dr. Pendelton, Dr. Clementi, Dr. Gentile, Dr. Cresswell-Yeager, and many others, have been instrumental in my progress, as have my peers in Cohort 10.”
Leslie’s dissertation research focuses on the accessibility of tutoring for underprivileged, underserved, and under-resourced families.
This topic is close to my heart, as I’ve witnessed first-hand the challenges families face in marginalized districts. I aim to establish a tutoring program within schools to offer additional support where it’s most needed. This initiative stems from my professional observations and personal experiences as a parent in a small school district.
Presently, Leslie works as a preschool intervention and referral specialist, helping to emphasize the importance of social-emotional learning and fostering inclusive environments. She’s had previous experience as a PreK, kindergarten, first, and second grade teacher, as well as Grade Level Chair and Teacher in Charge of numerous after-school programs.
Leslie is also the owner of Thoughts of Creating Learning, LLC. She believes her doctoral studies will assist in deepening her dedication to promoting educational equity. She is currently focused on launching and growing services to enhance access to education.
Ultimately, my goal is to ensure that every child, regardless of background, has access to the resources needed to succeed academically and develop essential life skills. Through education, we’re not just teaching facts and figures – we’re helping shape tomorrow’s future leaders and decision-makers.
