Current Position: Local Agency Work with a Contact at Einstein Elkins Park on PCU Floor
Lauren Mitros attended Bishop McDevitt High School, where she learned about GMercyU from her college advisor.
"The selling point for me was that I could commute to and from because GMercyU was less than a 20-minute drive from my house," Lauren said.
Lauren was accepted to GMercyU and was named a Maguire Scholar, a scholarship program funded by The Maguire Foundation. She knew she wanted to go into nursing and she said "it was important to know current nurses who graduated from GMercyU."
Like most nursing students, Lauren described the program as difficult.
"I appreciated the preceptors that followed what we were learning in class and applied during clinical," Lauren said.
Being able to apply the concepts hands-on really helped Lauren understand the material. Two faculty members that stood out to Lauren are Professor O'Hara and Professor Warnick. She also enjoyed Professor Ciocci, who served as her clinical advisor.
As a nursing student, Lauren was offered the opportunity to attend the Dominican Republic Nursing Mission Trip.
Being able to travel to a different country and provide healthcare to those who do not have any direct access to it was very fulfilling. It also set the precedent early on in my nursing career that nursing is more than just giving out medications or assessing patients. It is about how you interact with patients and the mark you leave on them.
Lauren's most notable clinical experiences were held at St. Mary's Medical Center, Jefferson Abington Hospital, Holy Redeemer Hospital, Grandview Hospital, and St. Christopher's Hospital for Children. She was very pleased with how the clinical instructors implemented what they were learning in class into their daily activities.
"It was super helpful to be able to understand our studies and get a hands-on experience," Lauren said.
During Lauren's four years at GMercyU, she was a member of the women's lacrosse program. Lauren's favorite part of GMercyU was that she had the opportunity to be a student-athlete and study nursing.
Many people acted surprised when Lauren said that she was a nursing major and an athlete.
To that, Lauren said, "GMercyU was really great at making the best of both worlds and allowing me to have the tools to succeed on and off the field."
Since graduating from GMercyU, Lauren has had a variety of jobs in the field. She first worked at Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia on their telemetry floor. In August 2020, she decided to switch paths and work as a travel nurse in Van Nuys, California on their tele/PCU unit. Lauren has also worked in Fairfax, Virginia as a float pool nurse. Currently, Lauren is doing local agency work and has a current contact at Einstein Elkins Park on their PCU floor.
GMercyU's education prepared me to be a travel nurse which allowed me to set myself up for success. Thank you, Gwynedd for helping me reach my goals!
Lauren has recently bought her first home and will be getting married in October 2023.
