Alex Pauling
Occupational Therapy 2026

After his high school unexpectedly closed, Alex Pauling transferred to Archbishop Wood High School where he graduated in 2022. As a high school junior, Alex attended an educational camp that hosted several college counselors. One just happened to be Dan Koski from GMercyU’s Admissions team.
“Dan presented first, and I was intrigued by it and what GMercyU had to offer its students” Alex said. “A half a year later, our paths met again when I came to an Open House at GMercyU.”
Why Occupational Science
Alex chose to pursue GMercyU's pre-OT degree, our Bachelor of Health Science in Occupational Science, with the goal of becoming an Occupational Therapist (OT).
I chose this major because at the Open House, I fell in love with the OT program and saw how they truly helped others, which is my goal in life, to help others. I want to grow into an amazing OT who will help others live their best lives.
As a second-year Occupational Science major, Alex has loved his experience in class with Dr. Thomas Mernar and Professor Meghan Mueller.
“They are excellent teachers, and I am blessed to be led by two licensed occupational therapists; it feels like I am getting some hands-on experience,” Alex said.
Campus Life
“My favorite part about GMercyU is the people. The people here are different from those at other colleges. I enjoy my day-to-day conversations, whether it’s about our favorite things to do or our hopes and dreams. I have met incredible people all over campus who come from all over the world,” Alex said.
On campus, Alex is a Resident Assistant (RA) for first-year students in Loyola Hall, where he creates programs to engage students and encourage interaction. He is also a Griffin Ambassador for the Admissions Office.
“I take pride in showing potential Griffin families around the University,” Alex said.
In addition to being an RA and Griffin Ambassador, Alex is a thrower on the Track & Field Team.
As a student-athlete, I get to enjoy the sport I love while getting my education. Sports takes up a lot of my time, but it has helped me work on my time management skills, and I am grateful that I can stay active.
During summer 2023, Alex was one of 10 students chosen to participate in Amazon Prime’s The College Tour where he talked about his experience at GMercyU.
Post-Graduation
Alex will graduate with his bachelor’s degree in Occupational Science in 2026, and he plans to earn his Master of Science (MS) in Occupational Therapy in 2027.
After graduating, Alex hopes to work with kids as an OT. He also wants to travel the world and explore other places and cultures.
“I am very grateful that I chose GMercyU as my college. GMercyU has become my second home, and I wouldn’t have it any other way,” Alex said.
